At the start of the American Civil War, in the spring of 1861, baseball was a national sport. The first official game of baseball is said by historians to have been played on June 19, 1846, at the Elysian Fields, in Hoboken, New Jersey, between the Knickerbockers and the New Yorks. An historical monument marks the spot where this game was played.

During the war, both Union and Confederate soldiers participated in baseball games as a means to combat their boredom and boost morale, and encourage camaraderie.
