CDV, General Henry A. Wise

(1806-76) An aggressive champion of states' rights, he was elected to Congress in 1833. From 1844-47 he was Minister to Brazil and from 1856-60 was the Governor of Virginia. At the outbreak of the Civil War he volunteered and was appointed a brigadier general in the Confederate army on June 5, 1861. At the head of the Wise Legion and other troops he fought in the West Virginia campaign under Robert E. Lee; again in North Carolina; under Beauregard in the defense of Charleston; and in Florida. From May 1864 to the end of the war he was on the Petersburg...

This superb scene was taken by Mathew Brady on Seminary Ridge on about July 15, 1863. An historic image, it is one of the finest to come out of the Civil War documenting Confederate uniforms and equipment. An extremely popular Confederate image.
