Kelsey, Sutler..........Dollars, and deduct the amount from pay due me. Excellent condition. These checks were filled out by soldiers of the 6th Ohio Volunteers as an I.O.U. to the regimental sutler towards the purchase of his goods. The hair's provenance came from a small lock given to Laura Thomas on April 19th, 1869, by General Lee himself [a copy of the note is provided in the certificate of authenticity] and was separated by noted antiquarian Charles Hamilton in 1992. 1837 Hard Times Token, Substitute For Shin Plasters

HT-66. The obverse has a vignette of the phoenix rising from the flames with the date Nov'r 1837. "Substitute For Shin Plasters" is printed around the edges. The flames symbolize that the only use for paper money, "shin plasters," was for it to be burned. The rising of the phoenix was meant to symbolizes the resumption of specie payments. The reverse side of the token has a wreath design with the date "May Tenth 1837." The slogan "Specie Payments Suspended" is printed around the edges. Very fine.
