Circa: 1973 ISBN: 0006321757
By Dan Jenkins. Published by the Museum of the City of Mobile, Alabama, 1973. Soft covers, 44 pages, index, illustrated, glossary, notes and bibliography. The green covers show some scattered surface scuffing. The interior of the book is in excellent condition. It is extremely tight, clean, and is a great reference source for early military buttons from the Gulf Coast of the United States. The content includes chapters on the following types of buttons: Plain Face buttons; French Colonial; British Colonial; Spanish Colonial; Early American; Infantry; Rifleman; and Artillery. Very desirable reference work.
Excavation of historic sites in the Mobile-Pensacola area has brought to light thousands of relics of the colonial and early American periods, and has produced a sizeable body of amateur archaeologists. Probably the most popular finds are the buttons of the various military organizations which played a part in the history of the region. They are also among the most difficult to identify without expensive, and often unavailable, reference works. Dan Jenkins has performed a service of great value in assembling the pertinent information in a concise handbook, and the Museum of the city of Mobile is grateful to him for permission to make his research available to the many who share his enjoyment and sifting. Caldwell Delaney, Museum Director City of Mobile. |
