Group of 3 items pertaining to the shipment of Union quartermaster stores from Boston to New Orleans
#1: 7 1/2 x 9 3/4, imprinted letter sheet, filled out in ink. From the Assistant Quartermaster's Office, Boston, Mass., and dated on Christmas Eve, December 24th, 1863. Written to Col. S.B. Holabird, U.S.A., Chief Q.M., Dept. of the Gulf, New Orleans, La. The letter discusses the shipment of quartermaster stores going to New Orleans by way of the Union Schooner, "Neptune's Bride," which should be nearing the Texas coast. Signed by Wm. W. McKim, Capt. & A.Q.M. There is a docket on the reverse that states that this schooner draws 10 feet forward, and 9 feet aft, and it is signed by Sam. H. Brown, Gov. Ship Clerk. Very fine.
#2: 8 x 6 3/4, manuscript in ink. It is addressed to the aforementioned Mr. Brown, and regards the discharge of the Schooner Neptune's Bride, and the orders issued by Colonel S.B. Holabird. Signed, Cyrus K. Mark, Capt. & A.Q.M., Jany. 26/64. Irregular top edge. Very fine.
#3: Imprinted transmittal envelope, 8 x 4, addressed in ink to Col. S.B. Holabird, U.S.A., Chief Qr. Mr. Dept. of the Gulf, New Orleans, La. It includes other information such as the name of the schooner, "Neptune's Bride," its place of departure, Boston, the date, Dec. 24/64, and her cargo is listed as 3,586 sacks of oats. Partial imprint at the upper right corner, Assistant Quartermaster's Office, Official Business. The cover has been trimmed along the right edge affecting part of the imprint. (Boston, Mass.). Light wear and some edge chips at the top of the envelope.
Captain William W. McKim, was from Massachusetts, and he was mustered into the service as Captain, A.Q.M., Vols., on August 3, 1861. He was commissioned Captain, U.S. Army, on July 2, 1864; promoted to brevet major, lieutenant colonel, and colonel, on March 13, 1865, for faithful and meritorious Civil War service. He was mustered out of the U.S. Army, on March 8, 1866. He died on April 2, 1895.
Captain Cyrus K. Mark, was from Pennsylvania, and he was commissioned Captain, A.Q.M., Vols., on November 17, 1862. He served until his discharge on March 15, 1865. He died on March 7, 1899.
