This Civil War date imprinted cover was once used to carry a receipt for a shipment of 139 bales of hay evidenced by the docket written in very neat and bold ink on the front of the envelope. The hay was sent via the ship "Old Dominion," to the U.S. Q.M. Department at New Orleans, in 1863, to keep the Union troops in the Department of the Gulf supplied. The "Old Dominion" was part of a group of ships that carried supplies from Boston, Massachusetts, to New Orleans, Louisiana during the war.
