Destruction of a Railroad Bridge

Imprint of Taylor & Huntington, Hartford, Conn. The War For The Union, Photographic History, 1861-1865. Original Photographs taken by the Government Photographer during the war. View No. 1214. Encampment On The James River. After the great "seven days battle," in 1862, the Army of the Potomac encamped on the James River. This scene shows a small section of their camps. Miles and miles of territory were thickly covered with tents, and formed a beautiful view when seen from some high hill overlooking the valley and the winding river. The albumen photograph measures, 4 3/8 x 3 1/8, and is blind stamped, copyrighted. Mount measures, 7 x 4 1/4.

There is another photograph on the reverse side. View No. 762. Both armies had a reckless habit of leaving the roads and bridges in a condition which ought not to have been permitted by the selectmen of the towns through which the army passed. This railroad bridge is so badly used up that there is no reasonable expectation that the trains can make schedule time for some days. The albumen photograph measures, 4 x 3 1/4. The Taylor & Huntington imprint, etc. is the same as described above.

Light age toning and wear. The mount is creased but this does not affect the photographs. Fine pair of images.
