United States Congressman & Senator from New York
(1833-1910) Born in Tioga County, N.Y., he attended Yale College, and in 1852 went into business as a druggist, a business he remained active in for twenty years. He was president of the Tioga National Bank; served as clerk of Tioga County, 1859-61; served as U.S. Congressman, 1873-77; was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1881, and served only 3 months when he resigned because of a dispute he had with President James A. Garfield over Federal appointments in New York; he was secretary, director and president of the United States Express Co.; served as a member of the Board of Quarantine Commissioners of New York, 1880-88; member of the Republican National Committee; served once again as U.S. Senator, 1897-1909; served as chairman of the Committee on Transportation Routes to the Seaboard; he also served on the Committee on Printing; the Committee on Cuban Relations; and the Committee on Interoceanic Canals.
