(1831-1909) He settled in Lawrence, Kansas, in 1859; enlisted as a volunteer during the Civil War, appointed assistant adjutant general of volunteers by President Abraham Lincoln; appointed assistant provost marshal general for Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado and Dakota Territory; served as U.S. Congressman, 1865-71, including the President Andrew Johnson Impeachment Congress; chairman of the Committee on Indian Affairs; member of the Kansas State House of Representatives in 1879, and served as speaker; moved to Oklahoma in 1889, and engaged in railroad building; was chairman of the statehood executive committee in 1891; member of the Territorial council, 1898-1902.
