United States Senator from Maryland
(1804-69) Born in Georgetown, Md. (now a part of Washington, D.C.), attended Georgetown University, and the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University), studied law,was admitted to the bar and commenced a practice in Upper Marlboro, Md., in 1823. Served as a member of the Maryland State House of Delegates, 1832-35. Was a Whig presidential elector in 1836. Served as a member of the Maryland State Senate, 1838-43. Was the Governor of Maryland, 1845-48. Served as U.S. Senator, 1850-55, and 1855-57.
