Photographed as a colonel

(1828-70) Prussian nobleman and Union officer. Educated at the Cadet School in Berlin, he served in the Prussian cavalry during the Schleswig-Holstein War and was decorated for bravery. In 1861 he came to the United States to offer his services to the Federal government and became aide-de-camp to General Louis Blenker, and soon became colonel of the 8th New York Infantry. In 1864, he was appointed colonel of the 68th New York Infantry and later received the rank of brevet brigadier general for his gallant actions during the battle of Nashville, Tenn. After the Civil War he went to Mexico and served as Colonel of the General Staff for Emperor Maximillian. When the emperor's government fell, he was captured but soon allowed to return to Europe. Re-entering the Prussian army in the Grenadier Guards, he was killed at the battle of Gravelotte, in the Franco-Prussian War.

Wet plate, albumen carte de visite photograph mounted to 2 3/8 x 4 card. Chest up view in uniform with rank of colonel. Backmark: E. Anthony, New York, made from a photographic negative from Brady's National Portrait Gallery. Excellent condition. Uncommon view.
