(1835-97) Born at Chillicothe, Ohio, he graduated from Miami University of Ohio, in 1856, and the Cincinnati Law School, in 1858, and was a lawyer by profession. He enlisted on October 14, 1862, as a 1st lieutenant, and was commissioned into the 2nd Missouri Infantry. He was discharged on March 11, 1863, for promotion to major and assistant adjutant general on the staff of General Gordon Granger. He was promoted to lieutenant colonel and chief of staff, 4th Army Corps, Army of the Cumberland, on November 10, 1863. He was promoted to brevet brigadier general, on March 13, 1865, for gallantry and meritorious service during the Atlanta campaign. After the war he served as chairman of the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park Commission, 1890-97.
