War Date Letter Signed

(1823-1876) He graduated in the West Point class of 1843, and served during the Mexican War. He later was a professor at the United States Military Academy. Upon the outbreak of the Civil War, he was adjutant general of the Department of Oregon. He was soon made lieutenant colonel and aide-de-camp to General George B. McClellan, and in the spring of 1862 accompanied McClellan to the Virginia Peninsula as adjutant general of the Army of the Potomac, also serving in this capacity during the Antietam campaign. During the battle of Fredericksburg, he was assigned by new army commander, General Ambrose E. Burnside, to the headquarters of the Left Grand Division, serving under General William B. Franklin. He later served as assistant adjutant general and inspector general in the regular service, carrying out the duties of these positions with great distinction until the end of the war. He carried out a number of important assignments for the War Department. It was General Hardie who personally traveled from Washington with the special orders that elevated General George G. Meade to command of The Army of the Potomac, on the eve of the battle of Gettysburg!
