(1841-1907) Enlisted on August 2, 1861, at Philadelphia, and was commissioned 1st lieutenant, 23rd Pennsylvania Infantry. He was discharged for promotion on October 5, 1861, and commissioned captain, 61st Pennsylvania Infantry. He was commissioned colonel, 27th New Jersey Infantry, October 9, 1862, and colonel, 33rd New Jersey Infantry, September 5, 1863. Promoted to brevet brigadier general, for his conduct during the campaign from Savannah, Ga., to Goldsboro, N.C., and brevet major general, for gallantry in the battles of Chattanooga, Tenn., Missionary Ridge, and Mill Creek Gap, near Dalton, Ga. Was awarded the Medal of Honor, for heroic gallantry at Williamsburg, Va., May 5, 1862, where he led a desperate charge against the Rebels.
