War Date Document Signed
(1821-96) Graduated in the West Point class of 1842. He was brevetted for gallantry 3 times during the Mexican War. He later served as an instructor at the U.S. Military Academy. At the outbreak of the Civil War he was commissioned a major general in the Confederate Army. During the Peninsular campaign he commanded a wing of the Army of Northern Virginia. He served briefly in 1862 as Confederate Secretary of War and later organized the Georgia state forces and fought them with marked excellence, particularly on the Chattahoochee before the battle of Atlanta, and on the fortified line at Savannah. He surrendered at Macon, Ga., on April 20, 1865.

This Will Certify, That G.W. Smith, Prest., has paid in at this office Five Hundred Dollars, for which amount Registered Bonds of the Confederate States of America, bearing interest from this date, at the rate of four per cent per annum, will be issued to him under the act approved February 17, 1864, upon the surrender of this Certificate at this office. $500 Signed by the Depositary.

For value received I hereby assign and transfer all my right and title in the within Certificate. G.W. Smith, Pres. E.M. & M. Co. In presence of A.R. Freeman, Notary Public. With embossed seal.
