For an officer wounded and captured during the Atlanta campaign, and who later escaped from a Rebel prison!

Muster In Roll of Captain Nathan Bostwick, Co. G, 20th Regiment of Ohio Infantry Volunteers, commanded by Major J.C. Fry, called into the service of the United States, by The President, from the Twenty first day of October 1861, (date of this muster), for the term of Three Years unless sooner discharged. The Company was organized by Capt. J.N. Cassill at Camp Chase, Ohio in the month of September 1861.

Lists Nathan Bostwick, Captain, age 46, Feb. 10/64, Vicksburg, Miss., enrolled by Gov. Brough for 3 years.

I Certify, On Honor, That this Muster Roll exhibits the true state of Captain Nathan Bostwick, Co. G, 20th Ohio Vol. Infty., for the period herein mentioned; that each man answers to his own proper name in person; and that the remarks set opposite the name of each officer and soldier are accurate and just. John C. Fry, Maj., Comdg. 20th O.V.V.I., March 1864, Vicksburg, Miss.

I Certify, On Honor, That I have carefully examined the officer whose name is borne on this Roll, and have accepted him into the service of the United States for the term of three years unless sooner discharged from this Tenth day of February 1864. W.C. [?], Capt. 13 Infty., A.C.M., 3 Div., 17 A.C., Mustering Officer, March 6, 1864, Vicksburg, Miss.

Age toning, light staining, wear and a few small edge chips. Folds have some archival tape repairs.

Nathan Bostwick, enlisted on October 18, 1861, as a 2nd lieutenant, and was commissioned into Co. G, 20th Ohio Infantry. He was promoted to 1st lieutenant, April 24, 1862, and captain, January 1, 1864. He was wounded, and captured, on July 22, 1864, at Atlanta, Ga., and confined at Macon, Ga. He was then sent to a Confederate hospital at Columbia, S.C. He escaped on January 1, 1864, traveled for 27 days, and arrived at Knoxville, Tenn., on December 27, 1864. He was mustered out of the Union Army on April 9, 1865.

John C. Fry, was 21 years old, when he enlisted as a 1st lieutenant, on April 27, 1861, and was commissioned into the 20th Ohio Infantry. He was promoted to captain, August 18, 1861; major, April 19, 1862; and lieutenant colonel, January 7, 1864. He was mustered out of service on October 19, 1864.

The 20th Ohio Infantry saw action at Fort Donelson, Shiloh, Iuka, Big Hatchie River, Raymond, Champion's Hill, Vicksburg, Jackson, the Meridian expedition, the Atlanta campaign, Jonesboro, Sherman's March to the Sea, Savannah, and the 1865 Carolina's campaign.
