The 56th Alabama Volunteers, also known as the 56th Regiment Partisan Rangers, commanded by Colonel William Boyles, served under General Daniel Ruggles in the Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana, then later in Ferguson's Brigade, Army of Tennessee. It fought in the Atlanta campaign, aided in the defenses of Savannah, and took an active part in the 1865 Carolina's campaign before surrendering.
