Wounded in the battle of Spotsylvania, Va. in 1864

Signed by colonel of the regiment who was captured at Ball's Bluff, Va. in 1861


14 x 9 1/2, imprinted document, filled out in ink, with vignette of a spread winged and American shield at the top.

The Commanding Officer Of The 36th Regiment Of Massachusetts Volunteers, To all who shall see these presents, greeting: Know Ye, That reposing special trust and confidence in the patriotism, valor, fidelity and abilities of Thomas H. Haskell, I do hereby appoint him Corporal in Company B of the 36th Regiment of Massachusetts Volunteers in the service of the United States, to rank as such from the 7th day of January, one thousand eight hundred and sixty three. He is therefore carefully and diligently to discharge the duty of Corporal by doing and performing all manner of things there unto belonging. And I do strictly charge and require all Non Commissioned Officers and Soldiers under his command to be obedient to his orders as Corporal, And he is to observe and follow such orders and direction from time to time, as he shall receive from me, or the future Commanding Officer of the Regiment, or other Superior Officers and Non Commissioned Officers set over him, according to the rules and discipline of War. This Warrant to continue in force during the pleasure of the Commanding Officer of the Regiment for the time being.

Given under my hand at the Head Quarters of the Regiment at Newport News, Va., this twenty first day of March, in the Year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty three.

Thomas H. Haskell, was a 21 year old clerk from Charlestown, Mass., when he enlisted as a private on July 24, 1862, and mustered into Co. B, 36th Massachusetts Infantry. He was promoted to corporal, on January 7, 1863, and 1st lieutenant on May 6, 1864. He was wounded in action during the battle of Spotsylvania, Va., on May 12, 1864. He was mustered out of the Union Army on June 8, 1865.

William H. Hodgkins, was a 22 year old clerk from Charlestown, Mass., when he enlisted as a private, on July 23, 1862, and was mustered into Co. B, 36th Massachusetts Infantry. He was promoted to 2nd lieutenant, October 17, 1862; 1st lieutenant, October 26, 1863; adjutant, February 21, 1864; captain, May 6, 1864; and brevet major, March 25, 1865. He was mustered out of the service on June 8, 1865.

Henry Bowman, was a 26 year old bookkeeper from Clinton, Mass., when he enlisted as a captain, on July 12, 1861, and was commissioned into Co. C, 15th Massachusetts Infantry. He was captured on October 15, 1861, in the battle of Ball's Bluff, Va., and confined in Richmond, Va. He was discharged for promotion on August 6, 1862, and commissioned major, 34th Massachusetts Infantry. He was mustered out of this regiment on August 22, 1862. On August 25, 1862, he was commissioned colonel of the 36th Massachusetts Infantry. He resigned on July 27, 1863. On February 29, 1864, he was commissioned into the U.S. Volunteers Quartermaster's Department, and served in this capacity until being mustered out of the service on August 15, 1866.

The 36th Massachusetts Infantry saw action at Fredericksburg, Vicksburg, Jackson, Blue Springs, Tenn., Campbell's Station, Tenn., Knoxville, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, and Petersburg.
