(1815-82) Graduated #2 in the West Point class of 1833. Upon the outbreak of the Civil War he was charged with constructing the defenses of Washington. Barnard participated in the 1st Bull Run campaign, and was appointed chief engineer of the Army of the Potomac under General George B. McClellan, directing the siege of Yorktown and reconnoitered the positions at Gaines' Mill, Oak Swamp and Malvern Hill. He was later named chief engineer of the armies in the field, and was a member of General U.S. Grant's staff. A very valuable officer, he had a 48 year army career in the Corps of Engineers.
