5 x 8, in ink.

Personally appeared before me, a Justice of the Peace, in and for the county of Wood, Fredrick Sheron and David Ackerman, who being first duly sworn, says that they are the same persons that were enlisted into the United States service on the 24th day of March 1864, for three years, and that they each drew county Bounty order for one hundred dollars, and sold said orders to a man, T.E. Raines, in Toledo, for fifty dollars each, and that is all that we have ever received on them, and that we was credited to Perrysburg Township, Wood County, Ohio.

Fredric Shering
David Ackerman

Sworn to and subscribed in my presence this 1st day Sept. 1865.

A.L. Fowler, J.[ustice] P.[eace]

Light age toning and wear. Very fine.

The names of these two men do not appear on the roster of any Ohio Civil War regiments, so they may have taken the money and run. It was a practice during the war for unscrupulous men to enlist, collect a bounty, and then desert, repeating this practice in different counties or states multiple times. So the true identity or history of Fredric Shering and David Ackerman is a mystery. Interesting Civil War manuscript.
