John D. Kurtz, was appointed to the U.S. Military Academy from the District of Columbia, and graduated #4 in the class of 1842. Commissioned 2nd lieutenant, engineers, July 1, 1842; worked on the fortifications at Charleston Harbor, 1842-51; served as assistant to the chief engineer, Washington, D.C., 1852-56; 1st lieutenant, Mar. 3, 1853; captain, July 1, 1856; major, Mar. 3, 1863; brevet lieutenant colonel and colonel Mar. 13, 1865, for faithful and meritorious service in the engineer dept. during the Civil War.
