(1824-1909) Born in Esperance, N.Y. Graduated from West Point in 1846, and served in the Mexican War where he was awarded brevets for gallantry in the battles of Contreras and Churubusco. Commissioned brevet 2nd lieutenant, 2nd U.S. Artillery, July 1, 1846; 2nd lieutenant, March 3, 1847; 1st lieutenant, Oct. 27, 1847; regimental quarter master, March 8, 1848; captain, commissary of subsistence, March 26, 1855; major, commissary of subsistence, July 1, 1861; lieutenant colonel, assistant commissary general of subsistence, Feb. 9, 1863; brevet colonel, brigadier general, and major general, March 13, 1865, for meritorious service during the Civil War. Retired from the Regular U.S. Army, August 28, 1888.
