John Bright: (1811-89) British radical and liberal statesman. Served as a member of The House of Commons, 1843-89. A brilliant orator, one of the greatest of his generation, he was a strong critic of British foreign policy. He formed the Anti Corn Law League in association with Richard Cobden.
Richard Cobden: (1804-65) A manufacturer, British radical & liberal statesman, and member of the House of Commons. In association with fellow statesman John Bright, he formed the Anti Corn Law League, and was its chief spokesman. He was a great admirer of the American democratic system, and a passionate supporter of President Abraham Lincoln and the Union.
