(1812-87) Graduated in the West Point class of 1832. Saw action in the Mexican War battles of Palo Alto and Resaca de la Palma. He accompanied Colonel Albert Sidney Johnston on the expedition against the Mormons in Utah. During the Civil War he served as chief of staff to his son-in-law, General George B. McClellan, and was later appointed inspector general of the Regular Army.

Standing view in uniform wearing double breasted frock coat with shoulder straps, probably as colonel, and posed with his arms folded across his chest. Brady, Washington imprint on the front mount. Gen. R.B. Marcy, U.S.A. is written in period ink. There is also a period ink ID written on the reverse which is partially hidden from some old mounting traces. There are a few tiny pin holes at the extreme top of the card mount (not on the albumen image portion). Age toning.
