Born in Prussia, he was the son of the Prussian Minister of War. He enlisted on Sept. 30, 1861, and was commissioned lieutenant colonel, U.S. Volunteers Aide-De-Camp. He served on the staff of General George B. McClellan, 1861-62, and with the Army of the Potomac, until his muster out of service, July 12, 1865.
