(1822-84) Born at Springfield, Mass., he enlisted on Sept. 3, 1861, and was commissioned colonel, of the 27th Massachusetts Infantry. Later served as Provost Marshal General, Department of Virginia and North Carolina. Captured on May 16, 1864, at Drewry's Bluff, Va., and was confined at Macon, Ga., and Columbia, S.C. Was exchanged at Charleston, S.C., August 3, 1864. Commissioned brevet brigadier general, March 13, 1865, for gallant and meritorious Civil War service.
