Received, New York, Jany. 3, 1863, in good order and well conditioned, from New Haven Steamboat Company, the following packages: One Box, Marked Maj. F.D. Callander. Vignette of steamboat at the bottom, and the name of the boat, Elm City, at the left edge. Very fine.
Major Franklin D. Callender, the recipient of this box, was a graduate of the West Point class of 1839. A career army officer, he achieved the rank of brevet brigadier general, April 9, 1865, and retired as a full colonel in 1879. During his splendid military career, he saw action in the war against the Florida Indians, being brevetted for active and highly meritorious service; in the Mexican War, he was brevetted for gallantry in the battles of Contreras and Churubusco; and in the Civil War was brevetted for meritorious service during the siege of Corinth. |
