Autographed carte de visite
(1823-1906) Born at Munfordville, Ky., he was a cousin of Gen. Ben Hardin Helm of the Confederate Army. He graduated in the West Point class of 1845. During the Mexican War he won a brevet for gallantry at Buena Vista. He saw much duty on the Indian frontier during the pre Civil War years. On Oct. 11, 1861, he was commissioned a brigadier general of volunteers. He commanded a division in Buell's Army of the Ohio at Shiloh and Perryville; and at Murfreesboro where he especially distinguished himself. Wood was wounded on Dec. 31, 1862, but refused to leave the field until the fighting was done. He also saw action at Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, the Atlanta campaign where his leg was shattered and Nashville.
