Headquarters Eighty first Regt., N.Y. Vols., Yorktown, Va., September 16th, 1862. Accounts for the number of men present and absent for duty, rations, and notes they are armed with Enfield Rifles. Signed, Jacob J. DeForest, Col. 81st, N.Y.S.V., Commanding, and D.C. Rix, Actg. Adjt. Light age toning and wear. Very fine.
Jacob DeForest, was 41 years old when he enlisted on Aug. 26, 1861, at Fort Ontario, N.Y., as Lieutenant Colonel, and was commissioned into the 81st New York Infantry. He was wounded in the battle of Fair Oaks, Va.; and promoted to Colonel, on July 7, 1862. He was discharged for disability on Sept. 1, 1864.
Daniel C. Rix, was 21 years old when he enlisted on Sept. 4, 1861, at Fulton, N.Y., as a 1st Lieutenant, and was commissioned into Co. F, 81st New York Infantry Infantry. He was promoted to Captain, Aug. 24, 1863, and was killed in action on Sept. 29, 1864, at Fort Harrison, Va., during the Petersburg campaign.
The 81st New York Infantry saw action at Yorktown, Williamsburg, Savage Station, Fair Oaks, the 7 Days battles, Swift Creek, Drewry's Bluff, Cold Harbor (212 killed & wounded), and Petersburg.
