War Date Document Signed Twice
(1824-91) Born in Portageville, N.Y., he was educated at Madison University (now Colgate), and was a 36 year old lawyer from Oneida, IL., when he enlisted on Sept. 8, 1862, as Lieutenant Colonel of the 102nd Illinois Infantry. He was promoted to Colonel, Oct. 24, 1862, and Brevet Brigadier General, Mar. 13, 1865. He was mustered out of service on June 6, 1865.
War Date Document Signed Twice: 8 x 10, imprinted forage requisition, filled out in ink, for the horse of Lt. Col. F.C. Smith, dated Oct. 2, 1862, at Frankfort, Ky. Signed twice, F.C. Smith, Lt. Col. Very fine.
The 102nd Illinois Infantry pursued General Braxton Bragg in Kentucky, saw action in the Atlanta campaign, accompanied General William T. Sherman on his march to the sea, took part in the siege and capture of Savannah, Ga., and participated in the 1865 Carolinas campaign.
