(1834-74) He was a 26 year old clerk from East Boston, Mass., when he enlisted on May 23, 1861, as a 1st lieutenant, and was commissioned into the 1st Massachusetts Infantry. He was promoted to regimental adjutant, May 26, 1861; he was discharged for promotion on Nov. 9, 1862, and was commissioned major, U.S. Vols. & A.D.C.; cited for gallantry in the battles of Antietam, Md., and Lookout Mountain, Tenn., and promoted to Brevet Brigadier General; mustered out of service on July 10, 1866.
Pass Signed: 3 3/4 x 5, imprinted form, filled out in ink. Headquarters Dept. of the East, New York, June 20, 1866. Mr. James N.
