GENERAL RUFUS INGALLS (Image1)

Titled, Glimpse at a Homelike Scene in the Midst of Fighting. This 1910 dated photographic print was part of an advertising portfolio especially done to promote the soon to be published, monumental 10 volume work titled, "The Photographic History of the Civil War," Francis T. Miller, editor in chief. The book set was issued in 1911 to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the start of the Civil War. Overall size is 11 x 12 1/8, image size is 7 1/2 x 9 1/2. Imprint below the image, Copyright, 1910, by the Patriot Publishing Co. From the Photographic History of the Civil War, Published by Review of Review Co. Includes the following descriptive text below the image. This picture of General Rufus Ingalls and a comfortable homelike group seems far removed from war. Yet General Ingalls is Chief Quartermaster of the Union Army and it is the gentle looking man on the top step who supplies the whole Federal Army with horses, mules, clothing, tents, transportation, etc. Quaint and interesting are the fashions of 50 years ago. The striking plaids and polka dots and the full skirts of the women's dresses, and their smoothly parted hair are in striking contrast to the clinging gowns and the elaborate hair dressing fashionable today. Here again we are reminded of the fact that the soldiers who fought so bravely were but boys. But the pleasant faces of the women will grow sad after the fun of picture taking is over and the boy soldiers go off, perhaps never to return. The chubby little girl on the step is too young to understand, but today how glad she would be to see this picture of the grown up brothers who helped to preserve her country.

Excellent condition.

This authentic 1910 Miller photographic print is very reasonably priced and would make a nice addition to your collection.
