To the members of Gettysburg Post G.A.R. No. 191,
Dear Sirs,
In writing to you I wish you would give me all the information you can of Titus McKenize Axe, a comrade of your post who died in your city on Friday, September 20 inst. '89. I claim him as my father, my name being Geo. McKenize Axe, born June 7th, 1859, at Phillipsburg, N.J. I had also a brother who was named William McClinen Axe. Titus McKinize Axe married one Mary Shepperd at Easton, Pa. on the 29th day August 1858. My brother who I have mentioned in this letter died in March 1876. I would have come to see my father while he was laying in state but I had no funds with which to pay my way to Boston. I see in the Boston Herald Evening Edition, 23 Sept. that his sister, a Mrs. Quickel is the only surviving relative and nearest of kin, and there is also another, my mother who is living with me. If you could inform me whether he left any property or any money or benefits coming from any of the lodges or societies that he belonged to you will confer on me a great favor, for I think I should have some benefit of it for he has not contributed anything to my support since he went to war. I have lost trace of Titus McKenize Axe for the last 17 years. When I last seen him he was in Lynn, Mass. He then promised to see that my brother and myself received so much a month for our support. Now Dear Sirs, I hoped you will heed my appeal for I am a son of a veteran and belong to Ferd. V. Dayton Camp No. 5, Trenton, N.J. I am so situated that I am unable to do any hard manual labor and I cannot get any work at my trade, and if he has left anything it will be very welcome to me for it might be enough with which I might start a little business. Hoping you will give this your kind attention, I remain yours in F.C. & L.
