(1833-1907) Graduated in the West Point class of 1854 ranking 3rd in his class. On Sept. 1, 1861, he was appointed colonel of the 3rd Wisconsin Infantry. He served under Gen. Banks in the 1862 Shenandoah Valley campaign and again at Cedar Mountain. He also fought in the Antietam campaign where he was wounded. He was promoted to brigadier general of volunteers to rank from Nov. 29, 1862. In the Chancellorsville campaign he commanded a brigade of General Alpheus S. Williams division; and at Gettysburg he directed the division while Williams was in temporary command of the 12th Corps. He later served in the Atlanta campaign and was in command of a division of the 23rd Corps at the battle of Franklin, Tenn. where his heroism earned him the brevet of major general. He also participated in the 1865 Carolina campaign.
