Includes the following descriptive text below the image: At the beginning of the war the Y.M.C.A. formed a special organization called the U.S. Christian Commission. It was undenominational, and it brought joy in unexpected ways to the soldier's heart. On Thanksgiving, the dreariness of the camp vanished before the turkey and mince pie cooked and packed by the fair members of the Commission. Often the soldiers went wild with joy, after months of hard tack, over the first soft bread baked by the U.S.C.C. But the most grateful blessing of all in the eyes of the men was the hot coffee served by the Christian Commission to the soldiers under fire. In all the turmoil it lent the army thousands of books and magazines. It supplied nurses and medicine; it held services everywhere, sometimes when minister and congregation both stood mid leg in mud and water. The Y.M.C.A. is a great organization, and has much to its credit, but nothing it has done outshines in service to mankind this work of the four years from 1861 to the surrender at Appomattox.
Excellent condition.
If you can't afford to buy the expensive, original Civil War date albumen photograph, that is if you can even find one, this authentic 1910 Miller photographic print is very reasonably priced and would make a nice addition to your collection.
