COLONEL WILLIAM T.C. GROWER (Image1)

Mortally wounded at the battle of Jonesboro, Ga.!

Was a 23 year old banker from New York City when he enlisted on May 20, 1861, as a captain, and was commissioned into Co. D, 17th New York Infantry. He was wounded in action on Aug. 30, 1862, at the 2nd battle of Bull Run; promoted to major, Feb. 25, 1863; colonel, Oct. 14, 1863; wounded in action on Sept. 1, 1864, at the battle of Jonesboro, Ga.; died of his wounds on Sept. 3, 1864, at Jonesboro, Ga.

This is an original woodcut engraving, executed from a photograph taken by C.D. Fredericks & Co. It came out of an original 1864 dated issue of Harper's Weekly. Measures 4 1/2 x 6 1/4, and comes with the original article about Colonel Grower from the same issue of Harper's. Excellent.
