1855 RECEIPT, STOREKEEPER RICHMOND PENITENTIARY (Image1)

5 3/4 x 2 1/2, manuscript in ink.

Richmond, March 15/55

Recd. of Mr. J.C. Spotts five dollars 31/100 freight on 7 boxes for Maj. M.M. Clark, Washington City. J.K. Macmurda.

Light age toning and a couple of very small edge tears which have been repaired on the reverse with archival tape. Fine 1855 manuscript receipt from Richmond.

James C. Spotts, who shipped the 7 boxes, was the storekeeper and general agent of the Virginia State Penitentiary.

Major Michael M. Clark, who the boxes were shipped to, was a graduate of the West Point class of 1825. Service record: 2nd Lieutenant, 2nd Artillery, July 1, 1826; A.Q.M., April 4, 1832 to July 7, 1838; 1st Lieutenant, 2nd Artillery, Dec. 31, 1833; Captain, Sept. 16, 1838 to June 18, 1846; Captain, A.Q.M., July 7, 1838; Major, Q.M., Aug. 1, 1856; died May 10, 1861.
