(1793-1863) Grandson of signer of the Declaration of Independence, Roger Sherman, cousin of U.S. Congressmen George F. Hoar and Ebenezer R. Hoar. Graduated from Yale in 1811, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1814 and commenced practice in New Haven, Conn. Member of the Connecticut State Senate, 1837-38; member of the Connecticut State House of Representatives, 1840-41; Governor of Connecticut, 1844-46; and U.S. Senator, 1847-51. He was a member of the Peace Convention in 1861 held in Washington, D.C. which tried to prevent the War Between The States.
