STATESMAN LEWIS CASS (Image1)

(1782-1866) American statesman. Served as U.S. Marshal for Ohio, 1807-12; fought in the War of 1812; was Governor of Michigan, 1813-31; U.S. Secretary of War, 1831-36; Minister to France, 1836-42; U.S. Senator, 1845-48, and 1849-57; and U.S. Secretary of State, 1857-60. He resigned the latter post in protest when the Buchanan administration refused to reinforce the forts of Charleston, S.C. on the eve of the Civil War.

Original 1862 dated portrait engraving with printed autograph. Made from the original painting by Chappel. Published by Johnson, Fry & Co., N.Y., 1862. 7 1/2 x 8 1/2. Top is trimmed. This does not affect the subject. Light age toning and wear. Very fine likeness.
