RECEIVING SURRENDER OF GENERAL TORAL
6 1/2 x 10, sepia tone print. Titled Surrender of General Toral to General Shafter, it was made from the original drawing by Victor S. Perard. Copyright 1898. Very tiny edge tear at extreme left border which is well away from any of the content. Very fine. This is a scene from the Spanish American War where Shafter was serving as Major General. Shafter had been a Civil War hero, serving with the 7th Michigan Infantry, and he received the Medal of Honor for gallantry at Fair Oaks, Va., where he was wounded. He was later captured at Thompson's Station and spent several months in a Rebel prison. By the end of the War Between the States he was a brevet brigadier general. He remained in the U.S. Army fighting in the Indian Wars, and received the nickname, Pecos Bill.
