Document Signed (1839-1925) Born in Lyons, France. Attended the College of Jolie Clair, near Paris, France. He was a sailor, French Zouave, and sculptor before the Civil War. After the war he was a newspaper publisher. Enlisted on Apr. 25, 1861, at New York City, as a sergeant, and was mustered into the 5th New York Infantry, Duryee's Zouaves. He was promoted to 2nd lieutenant, Sept. 1, 1861, and 1st lieutenant, July 8, 1862. He was severely wounded in the right shoulder on June 27, 1862, at the battle of Gaines Mill, Va. He was discharged for promotion on Nov. 28, 1862, and commissioned captain, Co. A, 165th New York Infantry. He was promoted to major, Sept. 2, 1863, lieutenant colonel, colonel, and brevet brigadier general, Mar. 13, 1865. He was cited for gallantry at Gaines Mill, Va., and Port Hudson, La.
