(1822-91) Born in Kanawha County, Va., he was educated at the Virginia Military Institute and West Point. He served as a 1st lieutenant of voltigeurs during the Mexican War. At the outbreak of the War Between the States, Fry was in Alabama engaged in the cotton manufacturing business. He was appointed colonel of the 13th Alabama Infantry which he led to Virginia. He was severely wounded at Seven Pines, again at Sharpsburg, and a third time at Chancellorsville. At Gettysburg, he commanded Archer's Brigade after the latter's capture, and participated in the heroic Pickett's Charge. He was wounded near the Union battle line, and captured. Returning to the army in time to participate in the Petersburg campaign, his commission of brigadier general dates to May 24, 1864. During the last months of the war, he held command in South Carolina and Georgia. After the war he was a successful business man and president of a cotton mill.
