War Date Document Signed (1839-1919) Born at Smithfield, Pa. He enlisted on Oct. 20, 1862, as a Captain, and was commissioned into the U.S. Volunteers Quartermaster Department. During the war he served on the staffs of Generals' William H. French, Alexander Hays and James H. Wilson. He also served as Chief Quartermaster, Dept. of Washington. He was promoted to major, Aug. 2, 1864; colonel, Oct. 24, 1864; and brevet brigadier general, Mar. 13, 1865. He remained in the Regular U.S. Army after the Civil War, retiring in 1903, with the rank of major general. He saw service in the Spanish American War and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery. War Date Document Signed: 10 x 8, imprinted form, filled out in ink. List of Quartermaster Stores, for eleven mules, received near Falmouth, Va., by Captain M.I. Ludington, on Dec. 21, 1862. Eight days earlier Ludington and the Army of the Potomac were engaged in the battle of Fredericksburg, Va.
