War Date Document Signed (1818-72) Born in Monticello, Georgia, he studied law, commenced practice in Alabama in 1838, was a member of the Alabama State House of Representatives, and served as a judge. In early 1861 he was appointed commissioner from Alabama to the Georgia secession convention. He was then named to the Provisional Confederate Congress where he was appointed chairman of the Committee on Engrossment. He also sat on the committees on Buildings; Executive Departments; and Flag and Seal. Elected Governor of Alabama in August 1861, he was active in preparing the state, especially Mobile, for defense and organizing troops for the field armies. His pro Jefferson Davis policies eventually made him unpopular in Alabama and he was defeated for another term by Thomas H. Watts in 1863.
