Document Signed (1826-95) Born in Southampton County, Va., he graduated from the Virginia Military Institute in 1847. Studying engineering, he was president and superintendent of the Norfolk & Petersburg R.R. at the outbreak of the Civil War. Soon appointed colonel of the 6th Virginia Infantry, he was involved in the capture of the Norfolk Navy Yard and commanded the Norfolk District until its evacuation. Mahone fought with the Army of Northern Virginia from Seven Pines to Appomattox, except while convalescing from wounds received at the battle of 2nd Manassas in the summer of 1862. He played a prominent role in the battle of the crater at Petersburg, Va., July 30, 1864. General Robert E. Lee had high praise for Mahone, saying he made a large contribution to the organization and command of the army. He was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1880. Document Signed: 10 3/4 x 7 1/2, two sided, imprinted document, signed in ink. Very ornate stock certificate with vignettes, and embossed Railroad Company seal. Atlantic, Mississippi, & Ohio Railroad Company stock certificate, boldly signed in ink, William Mahone, as President of the company. Issued to Joseph Brown, August 16, 1872. Very fine.
