State of Michigan, County of Genesee, On this 18th day of March A.D. 1870, personally appeared before me a Notary Public in and for the County and State aforesaid, James M. Williams, of Flushing in the County of Genesee and State of Michigan personally known to me, who being duly sworn according to law, that he is a resident of Flushing, County of Genesee, State of Michigan, and that he is the identical James M. Williams who enlisted as a Private in Co. C of the 23rd Regiment Michigan Volunteers; to serve for the period of three years, and was discharged from the service of the United States, as a Private, at Detroit, Michigan, by reason of close of the war, and that there is an additional bounty of $100 due him under the act of Congress approved July 28, 1866. Much more content. The document has been signed by two witnesses, Geo. W. Buckingham, and Robert Kent, as well as Henry R. Lovell, the Notary Public for Genesee County, Michigan. There is a second document, an 8 x 3 1/2 imprint, filled out in ink, with an embossed seal of the Genesee County Circuit Court, attached to the bottom. This document, signed by Charles D. Long, Clerk, is verifying the signature of H.R. Lovell, Notary Public, on the bounty application. Light wear and age toning. James M. Williams, was a 22 year old resident of Flushing, Michigan, when he enlisted on Aug. 12, 1862, as a private, and was mustered into Co. C, 23rd Michigan Infantry. He was discharged on July 20, 1865, at Detroit, Michigan. The 23rd Michigan Infantry participated in the pursuit of Confederate General John Hunt Morgan during his 1863 raid, fought in the Knoxville, Tenn. and Atlanta campaigns, were involved in the fiercest part of the fighting in the battle of Franklin, Tenn., and they carried the Confederate works at Fort Anderson, S.C. during Sherman's Carolinas campaign.
