War Period Autographed Cover Signed (1829-83) Born at Charleston, S.C., he graduated from South Carolina College, practiced law, and in 1856 was appointed United States district attorney. While serving in this position he prosecuted the famous case of the slave ship Echo. In 1861, he joined Hampton's Legion as captain, and saw action in the 1st battle of Manassas. Soon afterwards, he was promoted to colonel, and was given command of the 22nd North Carolina Infantry, which he led with distinction until his promotion to brigadier general, on June 1, 1864. He was seriously wounded at Gaines's Mill, Va., during the 7 Days battles. He led a brigade in the 1864 Shenandoah Valley campaign, and was wounded at Cedar Creek, resulting in the amputation of his leg. After the war, he resumed his law practice, and was elected attorney general of South Carolina in 1876.
