Original 1800's period woodcut engraving. Tipped to 6 x 9 1/4 page. Imprint reads: Monument to John Harvard. Here is shown the monument to John Harvard, the founder of Harvard University at Cambridge, the man by virtue of whose generous donations the establishment was made possible. The monument is artistically simple in its conception, being an upright shaft, fifteen feet in height, of solid native granite. It bears the following inscription: On the 26th of September, A.D., 1828, this stone was erected by the graduates of the University at Cambridge in honor of its founder, who died in Charleston (Charlestown) on the 26th of September, 1638. It stands in Charleston, where John Harvard lived and died. Very fine.
