His Personal Book Autographed 3 Times & Presented in 1861 (1821-96) Graduated in the West Point class of 1842. He was brevetted for gallantry 3 times during the Mexican War. He later served as an instructor at the U.S. Military Academy. At the outbreak of the Civil War he was commissioned a major general in the Confederate Army. During the Peninsular campaign he commanded a wing of the Army of Northern Virginia. He served briefly in 1862 as Confederate Secretary of War and later organized the Georgia state forces and fought them with marked excellence, particularly on the Chattahoochee before the battle of Atlanta, and on the fortified line at Savannah.
