(1834-1913) English banker, statesman and naturalist, he was educated at Eton College. Served as a member of Parliament where he introduced numerous reform bills including the Bank Holidays Act of 1871 and the Ancient Monuments Act of 1882. His work "Prehistoric Times," published in 1865, was printed in several languages and long used as a text book on the subject. It was probably the most influential archaeological book of the 19th century. He was elected the 1st President of the Institute of Bankers in 1879; was president of the London Chamber of Commerce, 1888-92; and vice-chairman, 1889-90, and chairman of the London County Council, 1890-92.
